The 8th World Green Economy Summit (WGES) was recently held in Dubai under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. The summit was organized by the World Green Economy Organization (WGEO), Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) and the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy, with the theme “Climate Action Leadership through Collaboration: The Roadmap to Net-Zero.”

At the event, a large number of ministers, experts, policy makers, civil servants, representatives of institutions and the academic community from around the world came together to discuss the importance of transitioning to a green economy. As part of a round table discussion on the subject, His Excellency Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Chairman of the WGEO and MD & CEO of DEWA, launched the “Global Alliance on Green Economy.”

The purpose of the alliance is to build a coalition of countries that prioritize a green economy in the context of climate change and sustainable development. It is also intended to increase the capacity of developing countries, provide support for their projects to transition to a green economy and exchange knowledge on implementation.

Al Tayer said the alliance will continue to grow, finding echoes in other areas and enlarging in various ways. He called on business leaders and political leaders around the world to join this initiative and support effective, environmentally responsible, economical solutions that meet today’s economic and environmental needs.

Her Excellency Mariam bint Mohammed Almheiri, UAE Minister for Climate Change and Environment, also spoke about the importance of the Global Alliance on Green Economy. She stated that if we want to accelerate our transition to a green economy, then we all need to work together and that the alliance is aplatform with a common goal.
